Golden
This was once the loading point for Upper Columbia sternwheelers. Completion of the C.P.R. in 1886 heralded the steamboat era when colourful little craft like the ‘Duchess’ freighted to the Columbia Lake and waypoints. Smelters built in 1904-05 were never ‘blown-in’. Camps, steamers and smelters have gone, but Golden thrives because of its strategic location on the nation’s major travel routes.

C’était autrefois le point de chargement des bateaux à roue arrière du haut Columbia. L’achèvement du C.P.R. en 1886 a annoncé l’ère des bateaux à vapeur, lorsque de pittoresques petites embarcations comme le « Duchess » transportaient des marchandises jusqu’au lac Columbia et aux escales intermédiaires. Les fonderies construites en 1904-1905 n’ont jamais été mises en marche. Camps, vapeurs et fonderies ont disparu, mais Golden prospère grâce à sa situation stratégique sur les grands axes de circulation du pays.
