Gilbert Stuart Newton

Gilbert Stuart Newton was the first artist born in British North America to be elected to the Royal Academy in 1832. In 1803, his family left Halifax for Massachusetts, where he studied art with his uncle, Gilbert Stuart, known for his portraits of American President George Washington. Newton travelled to Europe before settling in England, where he continued his training at the Royal Academy Schools. His portraits and paintings of literary subjects and theatrical scenes feature a strong sense of colour and composition. Declining mental health and an early death from consumption cut short a promising career.

Gilbert Stuart Newton
