Garth House
The Garth house, a classified historic monument, is a farm complex dating back to 1833, consisting of a stately residence and a barn-stable. The stone house is made up of a large rectangular two-storey main body (a change in grade exposes an additional storey at the rear) and a similar but smaller annex added in 1861. The house and the annex are capped with mansard roofs. The stone barn-stable, with a straight gable roof, was built in several stages between 1861 and 1885. The Garth house is located slightly back from the public road, on a large property between the rivière aux Chiens and the rivière des Mille Îles, in the municipality of Lorraine. It is surrounded by a protection area, and an archaeological site is associated with it.
The heritage value of the Garth house lies in its interest as an architectural ensemble. The house and its outbuilding, both of stone, form a farm complex of which few examples remain in Québec. The barn-stable is also thought to be one of the largest stone buildings of this category still in existence. Together with the archaeological remains of other outbuildings found on the site, these two buildings evoke the importance of the agricultural past of Lorraine, a new town created in 1960 out of the former Garth estate.
The heritage value of the Garth house also lies in its architectural interest. It reflects Neoclassical and Second Empire influences. The Neoclassical influence is evident, among other things, in the regular arrangement and symmetrical layout of the openings and in the large gallery covered on two sides. The Second Empire style originated in France in the mid-19th century, and its best-known example is the new Louvre, built in Paris between 1852 and 1857. This style spread rapidly in Lower Canada during the second half of the 19th century, when many residences with mansard roofs appeared. In 1861, the Garth house was substantially transformed and given this type of roof. Its masonry was also redone and an annex was added to the main body.
Maison Garth
