Galbraith Residence
The Galbraith Residence is a one and one half storey, Late Craftsman Bungalow style building located in a neighbourhood just north of the downtown core. The historic place is confined to the building footprint.
Built in 1923, the Galbraith Residence is a very good example of a Late Craftsman bungalow, a popular style among Nanaimo’s entrepreneurial and professional class during the 1920s. By that time, Newcastle Townsite was firmly established as an exclusive residential suburb. Today, the neighbourhood is a mix of commercial buildings, condominium and apartment complexes and single-family dwellings, but surviving earlier residences such as this building are important evidence of the original character of the area.
The Galbraith Residence is part of a significant grouping of heritage buildings in this neighbourhood.
Résidence Galbraith
La résidence Galbraith est un bâtiment d’un étage et demi de style bungalow Craftsman tardif, situé dans un quartier juste au nord du centre-ville. Le lieu patrimonial se limite à l’empreinte au sol du bâtiment.
Construite en 1923, la résidence Galbraith est un très bon exemple de bungalow Craftsman tardif, un style prisé par la classe entrepreneuriale et professionnelle de Nanaimo au cours des années 1920. À cette époque, le lotissement de Newcastle (Newcastle Townsite) était fermement établi comme banlieue résidentielle huppée. Aujourd’hui, le quartier regroupe des bâtiments commerciaux, des immeubles en copropriété et d’appartements ainsi que des maisons unifamiliales, mais les résidences anciennes qui subsistent, comme celle-ci, constituent d’importants témoins du caractère d’origine du secteur.
La résidence Galbraith fait partie d’un important ensemble de bâtiments patrimoniaux de ce quartier.
