Fraser Seigneurial Domain

The Fraser seigneurial domain, a classified historic site, includes a manor house, its outbuildings and its grounds. The manor house, built in 1829, is a two-storey red brick building topped with a mansard roof. The outbuildings include an icehouse and a shed. The ensemble is located on a main thoroughfare, in the heart of the old village core of the municipality of Rivière-du-Loup, and includes an archaeological component.

The heritage value of the Fraser seigneurial domain lies in its historical interest. Sixth seigneur of Rivière-du-Loup, Alexandre Fraser (died 1837) acquired the manor house in 1834, and the building was occupied by his descendants for 155 years. The manor house is thus closely linked to the socio-economic development of this town, which was originally named Fraserville because of the key role played there by several members of this family. Many public and community buildings were erected on land donated by the Fraser seigneurs.

The heritage value of the Fraser seigneurial domain also lies in its architectural interest. The manor house, built in 1829, was renovated in 1888. The work was carried out in the Queen Anne Revival style, according to plans commissioned from the architect Georges-Émile Tanguay (1858-1923), who went on to design several prestigious buildings in Québec City. The house brings together an exceptional number of elements associated with this style, expressed notably in the asymmetrical composition of the facade, the corner turret, the jerkinhead gable above the entrance and the balusters of the gallery. Having undergone few modifications since 1888, the manor house is the most important example of Queen Anne Revival residential architecture in Rivière-du-Loup.

The heritage value of the Fraser seigneurial domain also lies in its ethnological and archaeological interest. The secondary buildings include a shed and an icehouse as well as the remains of a stable, which bear witness to the domestic life of the occupants of seigneurial manor houses in the 19th century. The particularly large icehouse illustrates the importance of ice for preserving food at that time and its method of underground storage.

The heritage value of the Fraser seigneurial domain further lies in its harmonious integration into its surroundings. It bears witness to the Picturesque movement widespread in the 19th century, according to which the house is an element of the landscape in the same way as the gardens. The gallery surrounding the manor house on three sides and the French doors, which lead directly from the drawing room to the garden planted with flowers and fruit trees and including a vegetable garden, reflect this desire to integrate architecture with its surroundings. The lawn slopes gently and is adorned with trees and shrubs. Set on the upper part of the grounds, the manor house offers from its gallery an admirable view of the St. Lawrence River and in particular of Île-au-Lièvre.

Domaine seigneurial Fraser
