Former Post Office – Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts

The former post office, a cited historic monument, is a Beaux-Arts-inspired service building constructed between 1914 and 1916. The two-storey rectangular brick building is capped with a flat roof. The main façade is preceded by a monumental columned portico, and a one-storey annex was added at the rear of the building. The former post office stands at an intersection, in the city of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts.

The heritage value of the former post office lies in its architectural interest. Built between 1914 and 1916, the building is a witness to the influence of Beaux-Arts architecture in the design of public buildings during the first third of the 20th century. The style derives from the teaching of the École des beaux-arts in Paris. It was frequently used for the construction of public buildings in Québec and in North America in the early 20th century. Symmetry, light-coloured cladding, generally of stone, monumental compositions and the use of the classical vocabulary made Beaux-Arts architecture a highly appreciated synonym of power, permanence and prosperity. The former post office in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts is characteristic of Beaux-Arts architecture through its Doric columns and entablature, the symmetry and monumentality of its composition and its light-coloured brick cladding enhanced with concrete elements imitating dressed stone. This style conveys an image of power and stability. The federal government used it for its buildings. The Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts post office is an example.

The heritage value of the former post office also lies in its historical interest. The building bears witness to the economic prosperity of the village of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, linked to the growth of the forest industry, and to its role as a service centre for the region. From the last quarter of the 19th century, Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts was the seat of a land agency and the arrival point for mail for the Hautes-Laurentides. The arrival of the railway from 1891 onward brought very strong demographic and economic growth. New neighbourhoods emerged and many public buildings were constructed to serve the growing population. The former post office was built before the decline of the lumber industry and the downturn of the local economy. It is one of the last witnesses to this prosperous early-20th-century period, exceptional in the region.
