Former Fortune Cove Schoolhouse
This former schoolhouse is a one-and-one-half storey structure with a gable roof. Located on the Warren Road, it is on the south side of the Mill River on a small partially treed lot surrounded by farmland.
The building is valued as an example of a former one-room schoolhouse and for its contribution to the cultural heritage of the community of Fortune Cove.
The first rural school in Fortune Cove was constructed in 1864 on the north side of the Cove. It was replaced in 1888 by the current building which was built 1 km south of the first school in order to be more centrally located. Thomas Warren won the contract to construct the school which cost him more than what he had bid.
The school was operational as Number 34, until consolidation in 1970 at which time it became a summer cottage. In recent years, the current owner has made it his full time residence.
The building retains some of its original fenestration including the six-over-six windows in the front elevation which also have their window caps.
Ancienne école de Fortune Cove
Cette ancienne école est un bâtiment d’un étage et demi coiffé d’un toit à pignon. Située sur le chemin Warren, elle se trouve du côté sud de la rivière Mill, sur un petit terrain partiellement boisé entouré de terres agricoles.
Le bâtiment est valorisé en tant qu’exemple d’ancienne école de rang à classe unique et pour sa contribution au patrimoine culturel de la collectivité de Fortune Cove.
La première école rurale de Fortune Cove fut construite en 1864 du côté nord de l’anse. Elle fut remplacée en 1888 par le bâtiment actuel, construit à 1 km au sud de la première école afin d’être situé plus au centre. Thomas Warren obtint le contrat de construction de l’école, qui lui coûta plus cher que le montant de sa soumission.
L’école fonctionna sous le numéro 34 jusqu’au regroupement scolaire de 1970, après quoi elle devint un chalet d’été. Ces dernières années, le propriétaire actuel en a fait sa résidence permanente.
Le bâtiment conserve une partie de son fenêtrage d’origine, notamment les fenêtres à six carreaux sur six de l’élévation avant, qui ont aussi conservé leurs chapeaux de fenêtre.
