Flat Iron Building – Moncton
The Flat Iron Building consists of a two-story, brick façade commercial building located at 897-899 Main Street in Moncton. It is situated on the north side of Main Street, adjacent to the Subway Structure, which crosses Main Street at Archibald Street.
The Flat Iron Building is designated as a Local Historic Place because of its Italianate storefront architecture and its historical significance to the development of downtown Moncton.
The Flat Iron Building replaced a pre-1888 wooden structure of similar design in 1917 by the owner, J. D. LeBlanc, who operated a tailoring business there for many years. The concept was to design and create a better aesthetic and modern view for passengers passing by rail along the newly erected Subway Structure (1915). Its unique footprint was created by the intersection of the Intercolonial Railway crossing and Main Street.
The Flat Iron Building was designated as a Moncton Heritage Property under By-Law #Z-1102 in 1996.
L’édifice Flat Iron – Moncton
L’édifice Flat Iron est un édifice commercial en brique de deux étages sis au 897-899, rue Principale à Moncton. Il est situé du côté nord de cette rue, près de la Subway Structure qui traverse la rue Principale au niveau de la rue Archibald.
L’édifice Flat Iron a été déclaré site historique local à cause de sa façade d’inspiration italienne et de son importance historique dans le développement du centre-ville de Moncton.
L’édifice Flat Iron est de conception semblable à la structure de bois d’avant 1888 qu’il a remplacée. Le propriétaire J. D. LeBlanc l’a construit en 1917 et y a exploité une entreprise de fabrication de vêtements pendant de nombreuses années. Il s’agissait de concevoir et d’offrir une vue plus esthétique et plus moderne aux passagers du train qui circulait sur la Subway Structure tout nouvellement érigée (1915). La zone que couvre l’édifice a été créée par l’intersection du chemin de fer intercolonial et de la rue Principale.
En 1996, l’édifice Flat Iron a été déclaré bien patrimonial de la ville de Moncton en vertu du règlement numéro Z 1102.
