Early Chinese

During the Gold Rush after 1858, Chinese came to Gum San – “Gold Mountain” – seeking wealth from mining and logging but also by opening restaurants, stores, and laundries. They grew produce for market, traded and married with First Nations, and despite discrimination helped to shape BC by building the Cariboo Road and the Canadian Pacific Railway.
