Downes Court

This street is named in memory of Private Vincent Downes.

Vincent Downes grew up on McNay Street in London ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment in 1940 and shortly afterwards joined his Regiment in the UK. Following a long period of training, the RCR landed in Sicily in July 1943 as part of OP HUSKY. They fought throughout the Sicilian Campaign and landed in Reggio di Calabria in September 1943, as part of the Allied invasion of the Italian mainland. The RCR fought in several battles of the Italian campaign including key engagements at the Moro River near Ortona in December 1943. Private Vincent Downes was killed on 9 February 1944 during the weeks of fighting following the Battle for Ortona. He is buried at the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery.

Vincent Downes a grandi sur la rue McNay à London, en Ontario. Il s’est enrôlé dans le Royal Canadian Regiment en 1940 et peu après, il a joint son régiment au Royaume-Uni. Après une longue période d’entraînement, le RCR est arrivé en Sicile en juillet 1943 dans le cadre de l’OP HUSKY. Il a combattu partout dans la campagne sicilienne et est arrivé à Reggio di Calabria en septembre 1943, lors de l’invasion de l’Italie par les Alliés. Le RCR a participé à de nombreuses batailles de la campagne italienne, notamment des engagements névralgiques à la rivière Moro près d’Ortona en décembre 1943. Le soldat Vincent Downes a été tué le 9 février 1944 pendant les semaines de combat suivant la bataille d’Ortona. Il est inhumé au cimetière de guerre canadien de la Moro.
