Deslauriers House and Dairy
The complex formed by the Deslauriers house and dairy, a cited historic monument, includes among other things a dwelling built in 1867. The rectangular, one-and-a-half-storey stone house is topped by a gable roof with flared eaves. A covered gallery runs along the façade. The Deslauriers house and the dairy are located in an agricultural area of the municipality of Saint-Éphrem-de-Beauce.
The heritage value of the Deslauriers house and dairy lies in the architectural interest of the residence. Built in 1867, the house is a representative example of the neoclassical-inspired Québec house. This type of dwelling dominated the built landscape of the countryside and villages in the 19th century. It is a synthesis of French-inspired rural Québec architecture and English-influenced neoclassical domestic architecture, while reflecting a new way of living. The building draws on the traditional French house through its stone masonry, rectangular plan, one-and-a-half-storey elevation and gable roof. The flared eaves forming an overhang above the gallery and the symmetry of the front and rear façades are, however, British contributions. The windows in the upper part of the gable walls attest to the use of the attic as living space rather than as a loft, as had often been the case previously. The Deslauriers house is a well-preserved example of this type of dwelling.
The heritage value of the Deslauriers house and dairy also lies in the interest of their setting. Surrounded by farmland, the dwelling is located within a landscape inseparable from its function. The open, slightly elevated lot offers a panoramic view of the fields of the Beauce.
