Crandall Cenotaph

The Crandall cenotaph was erected shortly after the end of the First World War by the Crandall Women’s Patriotic Society. The exact date is unknown. For many years, Remembrance Day services were held at the Crandall Cenotaph. Now, however, as the numbers grow much smaller, Remembrance Day services are only held in Miniota. A small ceremony was held at the Crandall Cenotaph July 1, 2000 as a part of Crandall’s 2000 Reunion. At that service a presentation was made to the community by Mr. Stuart Johnson who puts in many hours at the Brandon Airforce Museum in Brandon, Manitoba. This presentation consisted of a display board of pictures of local airmen lost during the war, along with a brief history of each, where they served and in what capacity, where they were killed and where they were buried.

Le cénotaphe de Crandall a été érigé peu après la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale par la Women’s Patriotic Society de Crandall. On ne connaît pas la date exacte de son inauguration. Pendant des années, des cérémonies ont eu lieu au cénotaphe de Crandall à l’occasion du jour du Souvenir. De nos jours cependant, puisque l’assistance se fait de plus en plus réduite, ces cérémonies se tiennent uniquement à Miniota. Une petite cérémonie a cependant été organisée au cénotaphe de Crandall le 1er juillet 2000 dans le cadre de l’Amicale 2000 de Crandall. Lors de ce service, M. Stuart Johnson, qui a consacré de longues heures au musée de l’aviation de Brandon (Manitoba), a présenté à la foule un assemblage de photos des aviateurs de la localité tués pendant la guerre accompagné d’une brève histoire sur chacun comportant notamment des détails sur leur service, sur l’endroit où ils sont morts et sur celui où ils ont été enterrés.
