Colonel John McCrae Birthplace & Memorial Gardens

This memorial is dedicated to Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. This memorial was erected in 1946 by Branch 257 Canadian Legion. Dr. John McCrae is the author of “In Flander’s Fields” France 1918.

This memorial is at the birthplace of Dr. McCrae, which features a garden, stone fencing, a large memorial with his famous words inscribed, and a museum in the home of his childhood. Born here in November 1872, he died of pneumonia in January 1918 while in command of No. 3 Canadian General Hospital near Boulogne, France. He was buried a short distance from his post, at Wimereaux Cemetery, with full military honours. McCrae’s gravestone is placed flat, as are all the others in the section of the cemetery, because of the unstable sandy soil.

[Book in front of the monument/Livre devant le monument]

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
