Collège Saint-Michel
The Collège Saint-Michel, classified in 1961, is a former educational institution built in several stages beginning in 1857. The rectangular stone building has two storeys of masonry and is topped by a hipped mansard roof covered with cedar shingles. It includes an annex built in 1882, which reproduces the volume of the main block on a smaller scale. The designation also includes a wooden shed located behind the college. The two buildings are linked by a more recent annex, thus forming an L-shaped plan that creates a rear courtyard enclosed on three sides. The complex occupies a city block in the institutional core of the municipality of Vaudreuil-Dorion.
The heritage value of the Collège Saint-Michel lies in its architectural interest. The building is representative of the evolution of institutional architecture owing to the presence of elements belonging to two distinct periods. Built between 1857 and 1859, it is characteristic of institutional buildings erected outside the major centres in the mid-19th century, notably through its large stone block set close to the ground and its two storeys of masonry. The upper storey is treated as an attic, and the small-paned casement windows of the ground floor have cruciform main mullions that draw attention to the principal floor. Updated in 1900, the college also reflects the influence of the Second Empire style, which marked the architecture of colleges and convents in the late 19th century, through its hipped mansard roof and bellcote as well as its dormers with segmental-arched pediments. It has a wooden annex dating from 1882, which reproduces the volume of the main block on a smaller scale and served as lodging for the teaching directors, as well as a wooden shed at the rear. These three buildings form a complex whose functions recall the organization of life in 19th-century colleges.
The heritage value of the Collège Saint-Michel also lies in its relationship with its surroundings. The main façade faces avenue Saint-Charles, where the Saint-Michel church, a classified historic monument, and the former courthouse are also located. The property occupies an entire block of a grid plan uncommon in Québec’s urban history.
The heritage value of the Collège Saint-Michel also lies in its interest for the history of education in Québec. The Clercs de Saint-Viateur community arrived in the country in 1846 to teach at the newly founded Collège de Joliette. It soon opened other institutions in rural areas, including the Collège Saint-Michel in Vaudreuil, inaugurated in 1859. From 1946 to 1954, the school was run by the Frères du Sacré-Coeur. The college would serve an educational role for boys until the end of the 1950s. Its existence bears witness to the role of religious communities in education in Québec.
