Churchill Rocket Research Range

This facility was established by the United States as a northern base of operations for its rocket program during the International Geophysical Year, 1957-1958. It was subsequently maintained by American agencies and later by Canada because of Churchill’s strategic location near the magnetic pole, in an area of frequent northern lights activity and close to established supply routes. For many years this complex was the country’s premier upper atmosphere research centre and a world-renowned weather sounding facility. The Black Brant rocket, designed and built in Canada, was first launched from here in 1959.
