Cap-Saint-Alexis Cross

The Cap-Saint-Alexis Cross, a cited historic monument, is a religious monument of the Catholic tradition. The large metal structure consists of an upright and a crossbar whose intersection is adorned with a sun inscribed in a circle. The Cap-Saint-Alexis Cross stands on a wooded promontory in the La Baie borough of the city of Saguenay.

The heritage value of the Cap-Saint-Alexis Cross lies in its ethnological interest. It bears witness to the continuation of a popular religious practice until the mid-20th century. The first wayside crosses appeared in Québec with the construction of the chemin du Roy between Québec and Montréal. They continued to spread as roads were opened into the hinterland. The wayside cross sometimes served as a substitute for the church, particularly in the rangs, when the place of worship was too far away to reach. Some crosses were also erected to mark territory or to commemorate a particular event. The Cap-Saint-Alexis Cross illustrates the persistence of a popular practice into the second half of the 20th century. It is therefore a significant element of Québec’s religious heritage.
