Canoe River Tragedy

On Nov. 21, 1950, a westbound train carrying Canadian troops en route to the Korean War collided with an eastbound train near Canoe River, killing 21 people. A telegraph operator was charged with manslaughter for the miscommunication and was successfully defended by John Diefenbaker who later became Prime Minister in 1957.

La tragédie de Canoe River

Le 21 novembre 1950, un train en direction ouest transportant des soldats canadiens en route vers la guerre de Corée est entré en collision avec un train en direction est près de Canoe River, tuant 21 personnes. Un télégraphiste a été accusé d’homicide involontaire en raison d’une erreur de communication; il a été défendu avec succès par John Diefenbaker, devenu plus tard premier ministre en 1957.
