Binscarth Memorial

This memorial, dedicated to the war dead of Binscarth and district, was constructed in 1919 and unveiled on 2 June 1920. The local government commissioned a sculptor to construct the statue at a cost of $ 3,525. It is maintained by members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 74 (Binscarth).

The marble figure on the World War I memorial is carved in white carrerra marble of Italian manufacture. In general, a local memorial manufacturer would have been the go‐between for ordering this figure, and would have installed them on bases made here. The soldier—who appears as an adult man—is wearing webbing (personal load‐carrying equipment) and a helmet. The figure of a soldier wearing a cap looking forward, with rifle at his side stands at attention. The origin of these figures in Italy helps explain why their uniforms are not always 100% accurately Canadian, though the carvers were usually careful to put a maple leaf where Canadian uniforms had this symbol (on the cap and collar).
