Big Rock

Big Rock, a 400-ton glacial erratic, 14 feet high and 79 feet in circumference, was sacred to the Cree and other Plains Indians. In 1858 the explorer H. Y. Hind observed beads, bits of tobacco and fragments of cloth placed on it as offerings to Manitou. According to one legend, a giant eagle dropped the stone at its original site in the upper end of the Qu’Appelle Valley. This monument is constructed of fragments of the stone removed before the site was flooded and preserved, in recognition of its significance to the Indian people.

Big Rock
