Big Bear

Big Bear, a principal chief of the Cree Indians, roamed a vast area South to the Cypress Hills and the Missouri until 1883. His followers perpetrated the Frog Lake Massacre and destroyed Fort Pitt. Pursued to Loon Lake by the Militia, Big Bear eventually surrendered near Carlton, July 2, 1885. Imprisoned, he was released in 1887, and died on Little Pine Reserve January 17, 1888.

Big Bear, chef principal des Cris, a parcouru un vaste territoire jusqu’aux collines Cypress et au Missouri, au sud, jusqu’en 1883. Ses partisans ont perpétré le massacre de Frog Lake et détruit Fort Pitt. Poursuivi jusqu’au lac Loon par la milice, Big Bear s’est finalement rendu près de Carlton, le 2 juillet 1885. Emprisonné, il a été libéré en 1887 et est mort à la réserve de Little Pine le 17 janvier 1888.
