Battleford – Red Deer Forks Trail

Nearby can be seen ruts molded in the earth by the wheels of carts and wagons following the trail from Battleford to the fork of the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan Rivers. At that point was the junction of several major trails leading to Medicine Hat, Fort Walsh, Maple Creek and other points to the East and West. Early traffic between Battleford and the Metis settlement at the forks used a more direct route passing about eight miles to the West. This route was used from the 1880’s until settlement of the land forced the use of surveyed road allowances. Over it passed many of the early settlers with wagons laden with household effects and the tools and equipment needed to break the sod and prove out their homesteads.

Piste Battleford – Red Deer Forks
