Barrie Memorial

This memorial was constructed in memory of fallen heroes of the First World War and tells a story that Barrie and township will be proud of. It was erected on June 29, 1922.

According to a May 26, 1921 local newspaper article: “It was reported that eleven designs had been submitted by various firms in the trade, the one selected being the McIntosh Co., of Toronto, in conjunction with J.F. Murphy, of Barrie. It is 23 feet high, with a nine foot statue on the top. The statue is to be made according to models satisfactory to the committee. The main monument is to be made of Stanstead granite and the statue is of Barrie granite. The base is ten feet square. The committee for obtaining the names was left to be selected by Mrs. D.M. Stewart. There will be room for 160 names in one and half inch letters. The crests of the various arms of the service will be around the monument in the form of shields.”

Two slabs were later added commemorating the fallen heroes of the Second World War and Korean War.
