Auld Kirk 1836

This stone church, an attractive example of an early form of Gothic Revival architecture, was constructed in 1835-36 on land obtained from John Mitchell, one of Ramsay Township’s earliest settlers. Built by the local congregation of the Established Church of Scotland, it was also attended by Presbyterians from adjoining townships. The early settlers of Ramsay were visited by ministers from Drummond and Beckwith, but in 1834 the first resident minister, the Reverend John Fairburn, was inducted. In January 1864, during the ministry of the Reverend John McMorine (1846-1867), a new church was opened in nearby Almonte. Although little used since then, the “Auld Kirk” stands as a memorial to the pioneer Presbyterian settlers.

C’est en 1835-1836, sur un terrain obtenu de John Mitchell, l’un des premiers colons du canton de Ramsay, qu’on a construit cette église de pierres, un bel exemple d’architecture de style néo-gothique sous sa forme embryonnaire. Érigé par la congrégation locale de l’Église d’Écosse, le bâtiment a également accueilli des presbytériens des cantons avoisinants. Des pasteurs de Drummond et de Beckwith y ont célébré des offices pour les premiers colons de Ramsay avant l’entrée en service en 1834 du premier pasteur en résidence, le révérend John Fairburn. En janvier 1864, pendant le ministère du révérend John McMorine (1846-1867), on a inauguré une nouvelle église à Almonte, municipalité à proximité. Bien qu’elle ait peu servi depuis ce temps, l’église « Auld Kirk » fait fonction de bâtiment commémoratif des premiers colons presbytériens.
