Antoine-Jetté Windmill
The Antoine-Jetté windmill, a classified historic monument, was built in 1823. It is a three-storey cylindrical stone tower topped by a conical roof. The mill is located in the yard of a single-family house in a residential and commercial neighbourhood of the municipality of Repentigny, near the Grenier mill, also a classified historic monument. It is surrounded by a protection area.
The heritage value of the Antoine-Jetté windmill lies in its representativeness of a type of industrial building, the flour mill. The flour mills of the St. Lawrence valley are of two types: tower windmills and rectangular watermills. The Antoine-Jetté mill belongs to the first group. It is a massive cylindrical structure with a conical roof, three storeys high owing to the vertical arrangement of its mechanism. Despite the alterations it has undergone since it fell out of use (the tail pole has disappeared and the space between the fixed curb, which crowns the body, and the moving curb, which forms the base of the rotating cap, no longer exists), the original internal mechanism is still in place. It includes notably the brake wheel, the winch, the spindle, a few parts of the hopper and parts of the millstone regulator and of the hoist. The masonry and the framing are well preserved.
The heritage value of the Antoine-Jetté windmill also lies in its historical and ethnological interest. For a long time, mills were an integral part of the socio-economic life of the seigneurial system, which ended in 1854. The Antoine-Jetté mill, like the Grenier windmill, also in Repentigny, evokes the relative prosperity that then marked the rural economy of the Montréal region, based on the production and processing of grain crops. But with the upheavals in agriculture in the 19th century and the recession of 1860, most windmills, competing with one another, ceased operating, and those that remained would soon be replaced by industrial flour mills. Because of the low hydraulic potential of the region’s rivers, however, the Antoine-Jetté windmill, built in 1823, continued its grinding activities until the years 1910-1915.
