Amable-Hébert House

The Amable-Hébert house, a recognized historic monument, is a former French-inspired farmhouse built in 1804. The stone residence comprises a large rectangular main block one and a half storeys high and a summer kitchen set back to the northeast. Each part is covered by a steep gable roof. The house stands on a narrow lot lined with trees and shrubs, between the Richelieu River and the chemin des Patriotes, in the municipality of Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu.

The heritage value of the Amable-Hébert house lies in its architectural interest. Built in 1804, the dwelling is representative of the French-inspired rural house through its low stone main block set close to the ground, its steep gable roof with shallow eaves and the asymmetrical arrangement of its openings. The interest of the house also lies in its old interior features uncovered during a major restoration project. The stripping work revealed, among other things, built-in cupboards, the hearth of the bread oven, as well as mouldings and the original colours. The summer kitchen, added to the northeast shortly after construction, reproduces the volume of the main block on a smaller scale. This annex includes a bread oven and, at attic level, a few grain bins. These elements bear witness to past ways of life and a long agricultural tradition.
