Almighty Voice

In October 1895, Almighty Voice, seeing his people hungry and having been refused permission by the local Indian Agent to kill their own cattle for food, killed a cow to feed his family. For this deed Almighty Voice was arrested by the North West Mounted Police and imprisoned at Duck Lake. During the night he escaped and a week later killed a N.W.M.P. sergeant who was pursuing him. For the next two years, Almighty Voice stayed within this Reservation, except for brief hunting expeditions, and so avoided capture by the N.W.M.P. On May 28, 1897, on one such hunting expedition, he and two companions were surrounded by over 100 policemen and civilian volunteers in the Minichinas Hills, eight miles from here. Two N.W.M.P. and a civilian volunteer from Duck Lake were killed and three men wounded in the ensuing battle. After two days, Almighty Voice and his companions were killed when their entrenched position was shelled by field artillery brought in from Prince Albert and Regina. The final resting place of Almighty Voice is at the One Arrow Cemetery one quarter mile West of here.

Almighty Voice
