Seeking a route to the Pacific Ocean, this resolute fur trader and explorer, with his party of 9 men and a frail bark canoe, portaged nearby in May 1793 to avoid the awesome Peace River Canyon. On July 20 he reached tidewater. By this unrivalled achievement he became the first European to cross the Rockies and continental North America.

À la recherche d’une route vers l’océan Pacifique, ce traiteur de fourrures et explorateur résolu, avec son groupe de 9 hommes et un fragile canot d’écorce, a fait un portage près d’ici en mai 1793 pour éviter l’impressionnant canyon de la rivière de la Paix. Le 20 juillet, il atteignait l’eau salée. Par cet exploit sans égal, il est devenu le premier Européen à traverser les Rocheuses et l’Amérique du Nord continentale.
