Ahtahkahkoup (Star Blanket)
A leading chief of the Northern Cree Ahtahkahkoup was one of the principal signatories to Treaty 6, the treaty signed at Carlton in 1876. He selected a reserve at Sandy Lake where a mission of the Church of England had been established two years previously. The founder of the mission, the Rev. J. Hines wrote of his friend, “I have no hesitation in saying a better Indian never roamed the plains.” Mourned by all who knew him, this pioneer Indian statesman died in 1896 at an age of over eighty.
