Île Verte Lighthouse
In 1806, the Executive Council of Lower Canada ordered construction of a lighthouse to guide shipping past the treacherous shoals and currents off the mouth of the Saguenay. Completed in 1809, this was the first navigational light on the St. Lawrence and for 137 years, from 1827 to 1964, was tended by four generations of the Lindsay family. In 1969 the light was replaced by an automatic beacon, but the tall stone tower, the third oldest surviving lighthouse in Canada, remains basically unchanged from the original design.
