Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Canal

As the gateway to the Ottawa River, this canal was an integral part of the extensive network of inland navigable waterways built in Canada in the 19th century. The first lock, completed in 1843, allowed vessels to bypass the Sainte-Anne rapids, facilitating trade between the Upper Ottawa Valley and Québec City via Montreal. A second lock was built between 1879 and 1882 to serve the region’s growing lumber trade. By the mid-20th century, commercial navigation on the canal gave way to pleasure boating and recreation.
