Mining

Although native use of copper had been recorded by Champlain, it was not until the latter part of the 19th century that copper deposits were worked on a large scale in Canada. Important mines were opened and smelters were erected in the 1880’s and 1890’s in the Sudbury area and in southern British Columbia. The discovery of copper ore in north-western Québec in the early 1920’s led to the founding of Rouyn-Noranda and the opening of this region to development. Thereafter Canada became one of the World’s most important extractors of copper, with British Columbia, Québec and Manitoba leading in production.
