La Corne Nursing Station

Built in 1940, this nursing station is the best surviving example of the dispensary-residences established between 1932 and 1975 in the remote regions of Quebec. It was part of an extensive network created by the Service médical aux colons in response to the economic crisis of the 1930s. Gertrude Duchemin, the only nurse to occupy this station, provided front- line health care and education for 40 years. This dispensary stands as a reminder of the contribution of hundreds of outpost nurses to public health, as well as to the settlement of rural Quebec and the development of its social fabric.
