Marine Hospital

Built in 1830-1831 by the Commissioners of the Port of Miramichi, this sandstone structure is the oldest surviving marine hospital in Canada. Financed by a tax on shipping tonnage, it provided care for seamen involved in the timber trade. Its compact form, symmetry, and slightly flared roof with cupola, reflect elements of the classical architectural tradition popular in early 19th-century British North America. With the decline of the lumber export trade and the opening of a general hospital, this facility closed in 1921.
