Fort Charnisay

In 1645 D’Aulnay de Charnisay built a small wooden fort near here before seizing and destroying fort La Tour on the opposite of the harbour. A furrier named Martignon occupied the fortification in 1672. Governor Villebon rebuilt the fort before moving there in 1698. Destroyed two years later by Villebon’s successor, it was reconstructed in 1751 only to be burnt by the garrison as the troops of General Monckton approached in 1755. Monckton built Fort Frederick on the site, and that fort, largely abandoned in 1768, was burned by American privateers in 1775.

Fort Charnisay
