Georges Island

The labyrinth of batteries and forts on Georges Island—Elpaqkwitk to the Mi’kmaq—were part of the Halifax Defence Complex, which protected one of the main naval bases of the British Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the Déportation (1755–1762), the British imprisoned at different times about a thousand Acadians, including children, on this island. Most were deported, but some were detained here until 1764. Fort Charlotte and the seaward defences evolved over the following years in response to advances in technology, until the Canadian Forces transferred Georges Island to the National Parks Branch in 1960.
