Strathgartney Homestead

In the 1860s, Robert Bruce Stewart developed Strathgartney Homestead, west of this provincial park, as the centrepiece of his 67,000-acre estate worked by tenant farmers. He acquired part of the estate from his father, one of the absentee landowners who owned much of the Island. The homestead represented the inequity of the leasehold system that ended when the Land Purchase Act of 1875 forced owners of large estates to sell them to the government, which in turn resold them in small freeholds. Epekwitk (PEI) is traditional Mi’kmaw territory, yet no land was reserved for them when the Island was opened to British settlement in 1767.

Strathgartney Homestead
