Shipbuilding in Prince Edward Island

Emerging from the timber and shipping sectors, this industry became the principal economic activity of Prince Edward Island from 1820 to 1880. With more than 900 vessels built in 22 shipyards during the peak decade of the 1860s, the construction of wooden ships for export and trade was central to the development of a vibrant local economy and helped reduce the colony’s dependence on Great Britain. Through periods of prosperity and hardship, the industry fostered commercial and cultural exchange and influenced the debates surrounding the Island’s entry into Confederation.
