Wabana Iron Ore Mines

Here, from 1895 to 1966, men from Bell Island, Conception Bay and elsewhere in Newfoundland mined one of the world’s largest bodies of red hematite iron ore. Nova Scotia steel-makers opened the first mines here, and the union of Wabana iron with Cape Breton coal created an integrated steel industry in the Atlantic region. On Bell Island the culture of the outports blended into an industrial workplace. Starting from open pits, miners followed the ore far out under the bay. For a time these were Newfoundland’s most important mines, and a mainstay of the local economy.
