Afghanistan LAV III Monument

Following the terrorist attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1368 condemning the attacks and supporting international efforts to root out terrorism in Afghanistan.

On 7 October 2001, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced that Canada would contribute air, land and sea forces to the international campaign against terrorism. Operation APOLLO, the Canadian Armered Forces (CAF) contribution to the campaign, officially began, marking Canada’s entry in the international mission. The mission lasted over 12 years and resulted in the deployment of approximately 40,000 CAF members between 2001-2014.

On September 10, 2018, The Military Museums together with the United States Consul General, Canadian veterans of the War in Afghanistan, families of the fallen and special guest unveiled a symbolic LAV III Monument to honour the service of all CAF members including the 162 Canadians who lost their lives during the conflict.

The LAV III was relied upon extensively by troops in Afghanistan to carry out their daily missions. Now the new LAV III Monument will form an integral part of the Museum’s Afghanistan Exhibit.
