100th Anniversary of Wolseley Barracks Plaque
This memorial commemorates the 100th anniversary of Wolseley Barracks.
In the mid 1880’s, the Federal Government acquired the Wolseley Barracks site from the City of London, in exchange for the downtown military compound property that would become Victoria Park. Construction of the Barracks, the first purpose-built infantry training school erected by the Government, began in 1886 and was completed two years later. The main building, known as Wolseley Hall or “A” Block, was to house “D” Company of the Infantry School Corps.
With the eventual renaming of the Infantry School Corps to the Royal Canadian Regiment, Wolseley Barracks became the Home Station of the RCR. Unification of the Canadian Forces led to the renaming of the Barracks to CFB London in 1966. In 1992, 1st Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment was transferred to CFB Petawawa and the Base downsized, however Wolseley Barracks continues to house the RCR Museum as well as the 1st Hussars, 4th Battalion RCR, 31 Service Battalion and other support elements.
