American Military Presence in Newfoundland

The presence of thousands of Americans during and after World War II had a profound effect on Newfoundland. In 1940 the United Kingdom granted the United States 99-year leases for military bases at St. John’s, Stephenville and here at Argentia. Construction of the bases created employment, stimulated local business and helped restore Newfoundland’s self-confidence, shaken by the Depression and consequent loss of self- government. Prolonged exposure to the Americans accelerated the shift of Newfoundland’s cultural focus from Europe toward North America.
