Topham Street

Topham Street is dedicated to Corporal Frederik G. Topham V.C. In 1942, he enlisted in the Canadian army as a medical orderly. He joined the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, and on March 24, 1945, Corporal Topham and his Battalion parachuted into Germany as part of Operation Varsity. While treating casualties, he heard the cries of an injured soldier in the open. Topham watched as two successive orderlies were killed as they attempted to aid the soldier. Without hesitation, Topham crossed the field to the wounded man and was then himself shot through the nose. He administered first aid and then carried the man through continuous fire to the shelter of a wood. For the next two hours, Topham treated the wounded, refusing medical assistance for himself until all casualties had been cleared. On his way back to his company, Topham came across a Bren-gun carrier that had received a direct hit. The land vehicle was engulfed in flames and its own ammunition was exploding. Braving mortar fire, Topham entered the carrier and rescued its three occupants. Two of the men survived. For his acts of bravery, Topham received the Victoria Cross.

Rue Topham
