The Toronto, Simcoe and Muskoka Junction Railway Company

This company was incorporated by the Government of Ontario in 1869 to build a line to Lake Muskoka from the Northern Railway of Canada, which extended from Toronto to Barrie and Collingwood. Pressure for its construction came from settlers and lumbermen in the Muskoka region and from Toronto businessmen anxious to develop the City’s hinterland. Work was begun at Barrie in 1870 but was hampered by the rugged terrain and continual financial difficulties, which forced a reorganization of the Company in 1871 and its absorption by the Northern Railway in 1875. That year the line was finally completed to Gravenhurst and Muskoka Wharf to connect with steamboat service on Lake Muskoka. The line encouraged settlement, lumbering and the development of the Muskoka tourist industry.

Cette entreprise fut constituée en société par le gouvernement de l’Ontario en 1869, afin de construire une ligne de chemin de fer jusqu’au lac Muskoka à partir du Northern Railway of Canada, lequel s’étendait de Toronto à Barrie et à Collingwood. Des colons et des bûcherons de la région de Muskoka, ainsi que des hommes d’affaires torontois souhaitant développer l’arrière-pays de la ville, exercèrent une pression pour sa construction. Les travaux commencèrent à Barrie en 1870, mais ils furent ralentis par le terrain accidenté et de perpétuelles difficultés financières, ce qui força une réorganisation de la société en 1871 et son absorption par le Northern Railway en 1875. Cette année-là, la ligne fut finalement achevée jusqu’au quai de Gravenhurst du lac Muskoka pour la relier à un service de bateaux à vapeur sur le lac Muskoka. La ligne favorisa la colonisation, l’exploitation forestière et le développement de l’industrie touristique de Muskoka.
