Toronto General Hospital

This institution, the first general infirmary in Upper Canada, began operation in 1829. It was periodically hampered by administrative and financial difficulties, but through the initiative of the influential businessman, Joseph Flavelle, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (1904-21), services were reorganized and steps taken for the construction here of a new hospital. Designed by the firm of Darling & Pearson, it was begun in 1911 and officially opened two years later. Toronto General Hospital quickly moved to the forefront of Canadian medicine as an outstanding teaching and research centre. In association with the University of Toronto, Connaught Laboratories and other institutions, it achieved international recognition in the fields of radiology, heart surgery and the treatment of diabetes, arthritis and kidney and vascular disease.

Des difficultés administratives et financières l’entravent régulièrement, mais les services se réorganisent et des mesures sont prises pour construire un nouvel hôpital grâce à la détermination de l’influent homme d’affaires Joseph Flavelle, président du conseil d’administration (1904-1921). Conçu par le cabinet Darling & Pearson, il est mis en chantier en 1911 et inauguré officiellement deux ans plus tard. L’Hôpital Toronto General se hisse rapidement à la pointe de la médecine canadienne en tant que centre d’enseignement et de recherche de premier ordre. En collaboration avec l’Université de Toronto, les laboratoires Connaught et d’autres établissements, il obtient une reconnaissance internationale dans les domaines de la radiologie, de la chirurgie cardiaque et du traitement du diabète, de l’arthrite et des maladies rénales et vasculaires.
