Veterans Memorial Highway
This memorial is dedicated to all veterans. It was erected by Public Works and the City of Nepean. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation completed the construction of an 80 km four lane freeway from Highway 417 in Ottawa southerly to Highway 401. The highway was constructed in two phases; highway 416 North and 416 South. Highway 416 North is on a new alignment from Century Road northerly to Highway 417. It involves 21 km of new four-lane freeway, five interchanges, seven km of service roads and 27 bridges. Highway 416 South involved twinning 57 km (southbound lanes) of the existing Highway 16 from Century Road to Highway 401, eight interchanges, 29 structures, and 14 km of service roads.
Naming of the Highway – On the 54th Anniversary of D-Day, Highway 416 was officially named the Veterans Memorial Highway. Commemorating Highway 416 as the Veterans Memorial Highway is one small way of honouring our veterans, Thousands of Canadians have fought in defence of this great country and this commemoration is a sign of our respect to them. The new signs were unveiled at a ceremony on June 6, 1998. The dark blue signs include “Lest we Forget” and a Highway 416 identifier. Approximately 200 veterans and guests were present for the ceremony. (Source: www.mto.gov.on.ca)
