Harriston Cenotaph
This memorial is dedicated to those who fought in the First and Second World Wars. It was erected in June 1921 by the citizens of the Town of Harriston and the Township of Minto. The following is from a letter printed in the Harriston Review on April 12, 1923:
Mayor & Council, Gentlemen: Kindly permit me to compliment your Worship and your Council on the lovely monument you have erected on the public square. I have been coming to your town for the past years and I am always drawn to look upon this beautiful memorial for I have a dear son among the many thousands that sleep in Flanders Fields and God bless them all for I am sure they are worthy of all the blessings and respect that can be shown to the dead. Here is my one request that I am sure will please other fathers and mothers of those that sacrificed their lives for the cause of humanity. Remove the unsightly barrels and boards and fit up the little square. I might also add to my request to erect an electric light to be thrown on the memorial as I see in other towns. Thanking you and praying that my little request may be acted upon your worthy body. I am yours, J.C. Smith

Smith
