Redcliff Cenotaph

The Redcliff cenotaph was constructed in 1986 in memory of the war dead from the First and Second World Wars.

Inscription

[north face/côté nord]
DEDICATED TO THE GLORY OF THOSE WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY
ERECTED BY THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION REDCLIFF BRANCH NUMBER 6 1986

[The east face of the cenotaph contains the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae./Le poème « In Flanders Fields », de John McCrae, est inscrit sur le côté est du cénotaphe.]

IN FLANDERS FIELDS THE POPPIES BLOW
BETWEEN THE CROSSES ROW ON ROW
THAT MARK OUR PLACE
AND IN THE SKY
THE LARKS STILL BRAVELY SINGING FLY
SCARCE HEARD AMIDST THE GUNS BELOW

WE ARE THE DEAD. SHORT DAYS AGO
WE LIVED, FELT DAWN, SAW SUNSET GLOW,
LOVED, AND WERE LOVED, AND NOW WE LIE
IN FLANDERS FIELDS.

TAKE UP OUR QUARREL WITH THE FOE:
TO YOU FROM FAILING HANDS WE THROW
THE TORCH, BE YOURS TO HOLD IT HIGH.
IF YE BREAK FAITH WITH US WHO DIE
WE SHALL NOT SLEEP, THOUGH POPPIES GROW
IN FLANDERS FIELDS

[South face/côté sud]
In Remembrance of Redcliff and District Sons who paid the Supremesacrifice
