Sergeant Hugh Cairns Memorial Plaque

Sergeant Hugh Cairns showed great valour at Valenciennes, France on November 1, 1918, when an enemy machine gun fired on his platoon. Sergeant Cairns seized a Lewis light machine gun and rushed the opposing position, capturing it. He continued forward to a second machine gun emplacement, where he captured eighteen enemy soldiers and two more guns. Later in the day the Allied attack stalled when confronted by both machine gun fire and field artillery. Although wounded, Sergeant Cairns led a small party to outflank the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties and capturing fifty soldiers and all the enemy guns. After consolidation of the Allied position, Cairns went with a battle patrol and forced sixty more soldiers to surrender. While disarming the enemy soldiers Cairns was shot by one of the prisoners, and was wounded again in the brief but bloody skirmish which ensued. Cairn’s platoon regained control of the situation as he collapsed. He died of his wounds the next day.
