The Glengarry Congregational Church 1837

This log structure, completed in 1837, is the oldest remaining chapel in Ontario built by Congregationalists. Its first minister, the Reverend William McKillican (1776-1849), emigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1816, and settled in Glengarry the following year. Here, in 1823, he established one of the earliest congregations of his denomination in Upper Canada and ministered throughout the surrounding region. He was succeeded by his son John (1824-1911) who first preached in this chapel in 1850, and was ordained here the following year. During the next sixty years, local attendance diminished and, by about 1912, the building fell into disuse. In 1920, it was sold to the nearby Gordon Presbyterian Church

Cet édifice en rondins, achevé en 1837, abrite la plus ancienne chapelle construite par des congrégationalistes encore en existence en Ontario. Son premier pasteur, le révérend William McKillican (1776-1849), quitte l’Écosse pour émigrer au Canada en 1816 et s’installe à Glengarry l’année suivante. En 1823, il met sur pied l’une des premières paroisses congrégationalistes du Haut-Canada et exerce son ministère dans toute la région. Son fils John (1824-1911), qui lui succède, fait son premier prêche dans cette chapelle en 1850 et y est ordonné l’année suivante. Au cours des soixante années suivantes, la fréquentation diminue et, vers 1912, l’édifice tombe en désuétude. En 1920, il est vendu à la Gordon Presbyterian Church située à proximité.
