Memorial Drive

In May 1922 a line of newly-planted trees along the new Memorial Drive were dedicated in memory of Calgarians who died during the First World War. The memorial was rededicated on 9 September 1990 to incorporate additional trees along Memorial Drive and the addition of the remembrance of local veterans of the Second World War, the Korean War and peacekeeping missions around the world.

LEST WE FORGET

In May of 1922, Calgary Mayor Adams planted the first of many trees to line the City’s new Memorial Drive. These trees were planted in remembrance of the men who were sent overseas from Calgary and who fell in The Great War of 1914-18.

During the 1980’s many of these trees were removed, victims of old age, disease and road widening.

In June 1990, Calgary Mayor Al Duerr, assisted by representatives of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Parks Foundation, Calgary, planted the first of numerous replacement and additional trees on Memorial Drive.

This plaque was placed September 9, 1990 to rededicate Memorial Drive and its trees to the continued memory of those who fell, and those who served, not only in the Great War but in World War II, Korea and in Peacekeeping Missions in many parts of the world.

En mai 1922, plusieurs arbres furent plantés le long du nouveau Memorial Drive et dédiés aux citoyens de Calgary qui sont morts durant la Première Guerre mondiale. Ce mémorial a été reconsacré le 9 septembre 1990 par l’addition de nouveaux arbres et l’ajout d’un hommage aux anciens combattants de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la guerre de Corée et les missions du maintien de la paix un peu partout dans le monde.
